About this Organization
Blind & Vision Rehabilitation Services is the principal nonprofit agency in southwestern Pennsylvania for persons who are blind and vision impaired. We provide a complete care holistic approach in the fields of rehabilitation, vocational, and community support. As a leader in programs and services for people of all ages and incomes who are blind, vision impaired, we are committed to improving the lives of persons with vision loss and related disabilities by teaching independence and self-advocacy.
Each year, BVRS accomplishes its mission by serving more than 1,500 adults and teenagers in rehabilitation, vocational, and support programs, and an additional 14,000 children through our vision screening program. Our programs and expansive facilities make us one of the top rehabilitation centers in the country. BVRS' array of programs and services make it unique, both locally and nationally. The following, in particular, distinguish us from other agencies and contribute to its strong national reputation:
• Personal Adjustment to Blindness Training is an intensive, full-immersion, residential program that offers individualized instruction in daily living
activities and orientation and mobility.
• Low Vision Rehabilitation offers comprehensive eye exams, prescribed optical aids and essential training for those with a low vision diagnosis.
• Primary Vision Care ensures that all individuals regardless of their ability to pay have access to annual eye exams and glasses.
• The Access Technology Program delivers instruction in current adaptive and computer equipment for people with visual impairments.
• Children's Vision Screening provides free vision screening to children 12 months to 6 years of age throughout the County.
• Community-Based Training provides in-home assessment, counseling and rehabilitation training. This program helps older adults safely and
confidentially age in place.
• Teenagers participate in our Community Career Adjustment Program which exposes them viable career options while participating in a specially
modified Adjustment to Blindness Training Program.
• Our Deaf/Blind Program assists individuals who are deaf/blind achieve competitive employment by working with both client and employer.
• Employment Support Services offer job coaching, resume and interview preparation, employment opportunities, and on-the-job training to help
clients gain or maintain employment.
• The Employment and Community Transition Programs helps persons with significant disabilities achieve a higher level of independence through
vocational and independent-living skills training.
• Our Industries program employs individuals with a vision impairment to manufacture and assemble products to fulfill government and private
company contracts.
• Pre-Employment Transition Services helps students 14 years of age or older pursue career interests by providing: job shadowing, work-based
experiences, pre-vocational activities, and job readiness training.
• We provide door-to-door transportation services to eligible senior to essential appointments, like doctor visits, banking, or grocery shopping.
• Case Management offer counseling support for people who are blind or vision impaired by providing materials and referrals to rehabilitation
programs.
