Just Harvest Education Fund

About this Organization

In the Pittsburgh region, about 1 in 8 of our neighbors is hungry and nearly 1 in 2 lack access to a grocery store within a mile of their home.

"Hunger is not a shortage of food-it's a shortage of justice." - Ken Regal, Executive Director

Just Harvest was founded over 35 years ago and is based in a long tradition of movements for social and economic justice. We focus on the immediate needs of our neighbors who experience hunger and on winning long-term public policy change for people in Pittsburgh and beyond.

Our mission
• Address root causes of hunger + confront systemic injustice
• Connect communities to benefits + policy solutions
• Create a just system of food access

Our vision
• Everyone has access to the food and resources they need to thrive
• Our government prioritizes people over profit
• Empowered communities with democratic equity

Our impact
We have helped 60K+ people access critical benefits to keep food on the table. Our programs have also helped people access tens of millions of dollars in nutrition assistance, tax credits, and other government benefits. Recent policy and advocacy campaigns that we worked on have made real change: most recently in the creation of the $3M Food Justice Fund for Pittsburgh and Allegheny Go, a program that offers a 50% discount on Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) fares to SNAP recipients and their children.
