South Hills Interfaith Movement

About this Organization

SHIM is one of the only comprehensive organizations meeting needs of South Hills residents in the area. Thanks to strong partnerships with Allegheny County Department of Human Services, the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania, and local congregations, SHIM is a hub for families facing crisis. By providing essential services in an accessible way to a diverse population, SHIM is vital to the social service safety net in the region. SHIM serves low-income suburban families, including a growing number of refugee families from around the world. We have three program sites in Bethel Park, Baldwin and in Whitehall Borough. Our work centers on meeting basic needs, achieving self-sufficiency, and building community. Since its founding, SHIM has strived to empower people of all races, faiths, and life experiences. SHIM's core values are equity and inclusion, addressing needs holistically, prioritizing people, building community, and partnering for power. As the South Hills has diversified, SHIM has been a strong advocate for diverse voices, promoting equity and inclusion among residents. Our programs serve more than 8,500 individuals each year and provide significant direct benefits to families and communities. In the last year our three food pantries distributed 836,064 pounds of food to approximately 3,900 individuals monthly, 7,869 overall. Twelve community gardens grew 12,490 pounds of fresh produce for our pantries, including vegetables and fruits requested by our immigrant and refugee neighbors. Our youth programs served more than 300 kids aged 3-18 and our Back-to-School program distributed to more than 1,700 students K-12. SHIM served 1,000 individuals through service coordination, helping 140 neighbors access more than $55,000 in utility assistance and helping 121 clients access $97,352 in emergency grants. More than 300 volunteers provided 15,453 hours of service, saving the organization more than $490,000 in labor costs
