The Open Door, Inc

About this Organization

The Open Door, Inc. provides a variety of services to improve access to and engagement in healthcare and social services for individuals living with HIV to improve their health and quality of life. Our mission: "Building from a harm reduction model, The Open Door provides supportive housing and related services that improve the health of the forgotten population of high risk, chronically homeless people living with HIV". Our programmatic approach is premised on the belief that vulnerable and at-risk homeless individuals are more responsive to interventions and specifically, clinical interventions if they are stably housed. Although our city of Pittsburgh has leading-edge HIV clinical care services, the targeted participants of our program are extremely marginalized and have historically had difficulty accessing care. This is the very reason for the existence of The Open Door, INC. Our belief is simple "HOUSING IS HEALTHCARE," in that if we reduce the fear, stress, and insecurity that inevitably comes with homelessness or chronic homelessness, focus and effort can be placed on healthcare, clinical adherence, social service pursuits, and overall wellbeing. The Open Door provides emergency housing/hotel accommodations, transitional housing, permanent housing, representative payee, non-medical case management, medication adherence reminders, medical appointment reminders, medical transportation, advocacy, resource assistance, utility assistance, life skills groups, resident and community participant meals, nutrition supplementation, coping skills groups, budgeting classes, therapeutic art, conflict resolution, trauma reduction, effective communication, interviewing, resume workshops, empowerment counseling, and various other groups and services.
