Community Human Services Corporation

About this Organization

At Community Human Services (CHS), we believe that everyone has value. It is a simple belief, yet one that has stayed with us since 1970, when a small group in South Oakland formed CHS. They created programs that recognized the importance of having a strong relationship with your community and with each other. No matter the race, cultural background, gender identity, language, religion, or disability, our programs provide access to basic needs and services- we consider a basic human right- no matter how many times they have been turned away, silenced, or overlooked. Operating under Housing First and Harm Reduction principles and leading the housing initiatives within the Greater Pittsburgh area, our goal is to assist individuals and families experiencing a housing crisis through a multitude of programs including short-term and long-term options. The organization's services include the operation of shelters, housing outreach, permanent low-income housing programs, permanent residential programs for targeted low-income populations, mental health services, and food accessibility. Community Human Services assists individuals and families experiencing a housing crisis by supporting them in obtaining and remaining in safe, affordable homes. We serve anyone over the age of 18 that lives within Allegheny County and is unstably housed, at imminent risk, or already homeless. CHS operates various scattered-site low-income housing units where we develop and maintain relationships with many landlords in Allegheny County to find appropriate housing to meet the critical needs of residents and help mitigate landlord-tenant issues. To reduce residents becoming homeless, we assist our clients to remain housed. Stabilization efforts include rental assistance, rental arrears, utility assistance, and vital household items (such as a refrigerator or a bed) to assist families and households in their transition to self-sufficient housing. We also empower adults and seniors with health challenges to remain safe in their homes.  As the housing crisis in Pittsburgh continues, the need for safe, stable housing in Allegheny County is becoming overwhelming. Here at CHS, we are working diligently to provide our services to as many neighbors as possible by creating areas of opportunity for additional assistance to improve success rates and reduce the cycle of homelessness.
