First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh

About this Organization

We are so much more than a beautiful, historic building. Our location allows us to minister to our poor, homeless and vulnerable neighbors, many of whom live on the streets and are in need of food and other assistance. Each Monday through Thursday, our church doors are open to those who need a shelter from the weather or a place for quiet reflection and prayer. Because of our strategic location, we also welcome thousands of visitors into our building each year. We provide space at no or little cost to non-profit organizations in Pittsburgh. We seek to expand our ministry to Pittsburgh and its people in innovative, creative ways. Following are some of the ways in which we reach out to our community. 1) Downtown Ministerium Walk-In Ministry - - FPCP serves one week in four as a place of hospitality and material help for nearly 200 clients who experience the hardships of homelessness and food insecurity. Fresh meals are provided as well as access to a food pantry stocked with items we purchase at a discount from the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Annually, we serve more than 2,000 individuals and families through our Food Pantry. Each year, we distribute more than six tons of food through our Food Pantry. 2) The Cellar is a high school after school program located in the basement of our church. It operates year-round each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3-6 pm. Each session, as many as 50 high school students gather for food, games, conversation and much more. It provides students with a safe place to hang out during the often volatile after school hours. 3) Partnership with "Outreached Arms" - - Outreached Arms provides hope to Pittsburgh's inner city homeless and working poor by serving warm meals, nurturing relationships, meeting essential needs, and sharing the message of Jesus Christ. FPCP donates our kitchen and cafeteria space each Tuesday night for meal preparation and service to more than 100 homeless guests. We have earned the trust of our Tuesday night guests and have been able to lead them to housing, employment and other resources. Several of our church members give of their time in serving these meals. 4) Ligonier Camp and Conference Center (LCCC) is owned by FPCP, but has its own 501(c)(3) and has provided Christian camping for youth and families since 1914. With summer camp sessions frequently full to overflowing, an outstanding adventure education program, a beautiful lodge and conference center, and over 500 acres of rustic property in Ligonier, LCCC serves more than 8,500 people each year in camping and conferencing. 5) National, International and Local Missions - - First Presbyterian Church supports Christ's work by more than 40 organizations and missionaries in this city, the United States and around the world, and our members are involved through prayer, volunteer work, financial contributions and/or mission service. Each year in the spring, the Church hosts a weekend Missions Conference that brings together missionaries who share what God is doing locally and around the world.
