North Hills Affordable Housing dba HEARTH

About this Organization

History: HEARTH was founded in 1989 after a group of service providers in northern Allegheny County identified affordable housing as the foremost-unmet need in the area. The group raised almost $1 million to renovate a space to launch services and opened its doors in 1995. In 1997 North Hills Affordable Housing became HEARTH (Homelessness Ends with Advocacy, Resources, Training, and Housing). Now, 28 years later, HEARTH recognizes domestic violence and mental health issues as two of the most common causes of homelessness for women with children. Current Programs and Activities: We provide a safe, stable home so our supportive services can be more effective in moving families toward self-sufficiency. By requiring program participants to go to school or the workforce, attend life skills training, and work through individual issues via case management (which includes behavioral and mental health support), each client's experience is customized to meet the specific needs of that family. We specialize in providing families the help they need including: Housing - HEARTH has been providing housing for moms in need for 29 years. Women can remain in our transitional housing program for up to 2 years. Supportive Services - HEARTH's security, case management, and on-site services address basic needs allowing participants to focus on their education or employment and family. During meetings with our Program Director and family Support Specialists, participants set goals. The goal plans are specifically designed to keep clients active in their own quest for self-sufficiency. Economic Mobility - HEARTH's program design helps participants achieve economic independence through education and employment. The educational needs are met by a variety of resources such as The Community College of Allegheny County, Bidwell Training Center, Rosedale Technical College, Community Kitchen, and more; which is supported by our program staff from enrollment to completion. Job training is also an option for our moms who want hands-on mentorship and workforce development opportunities. Basic Needs - HEARTH fulfills basic needs of the families in our program including housing, food, clothing, and essentials. Food items are available 24/7 in the on-site food pantry.
