Fifty-four (54) years ago this October, local citizens and clergy organized and opened Tri-City Meals on Wheels, a totally non-profit organization, to the public. Beginning their work in the kitchen in a local to church to now serving those in need from a building built on a ninety-nine (99) year leased plot of ground ($1.00/year) in the borough of Southwest Greensburg, Tri-City Meals on Wheels has never stopped serving those in need. Even through the pandemic our clients daily received meals prepared by one paid employee and approximately one hundred and twenty-five (125) volunteers.
Monday thru Friday, daily teams of volunteers along with our kitchen coordinator prepare home-cooked meals, package each meal and pack them in insulated food storage containers for the volunteer drivers and runners to deliver to our clients. Each meal consists of a protein, starch and vegetable along with bread, fruit, pudding or yogurt and dessert.
We serve the Greensburg area, South and Southwest Greensburg areas, West Point Area. Ft. Allen area and Jeannette, Penn, Manor and Harrison City areas. These areas are divided into fourteen (14) different routes. Each day fourteen different teams deliver our delicious meals to our clients. Those who volunteer to deliver the meals use their own vehicles and supply their own fuel. Those who deliver have connected and become friends with many of our clients, who look forward to their visits. Those friends also check on the clients for any needs they may have and in some instances have assisted in healthcare issues. We have emergency contact numbers for our clients that are used if there is a need.
Our cost per meal is $3.50 per day and we also carry several hardship cases. At this time, because of continued rising cost we are unable to accept any new hardship cases. We are doing our very best to keep our meal cost at its present rate but, this task is getting increasingly difficult. We know that many of our clients are unable to tolerate an increase in cost. We have been blessed with help from local churches donating cookies and desserts. Local grocery stores, bakeries and restaurants also donate bread and desserts. Without their generosity we could not keep our costs down.
Our volunteers not only cook, package and deliver, our Administrative Board is also completely volunteer. We are in need of volunteers. Some are not as young as we used to be and are unable to continue helping. Others continue to do their best at a slower pace. We are very grateful for all of their help but, we need help.
We have been the recipient of grants to help with the upkeep and maintenance of our kitchen equipment and building. Much of our equipment is very old and in need of replacement. This includes our freezer and cooler that has been working overtime during this heat wave. Just like our homes there is always something needed to be fixed or replaced. Those cost are along with utilities are also increasing.
Tri-City Meals on Wheels has no thoughts of cutting back or terminating service to our clients. We welcome any and all new clients and will continue our pursuit of serving all who need within our service area.
Thank you for considering our organization for your support. We appreciate you interest and generosity.
