Unity Food Pantry, a member agency of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, has served our neighbors in need in Greentree and other surrounding areas since 1982. Our goal is to promote health and well-being for each member of the almost 100 registered families whom we serve in Greentree, Dormont, and Westwood, as well as those parts of Pittsburgh, Scott, Mt. Lebanon, and Crafton Heights for which we are the closest food pantry. To help ensure the health and well being of our clients, it is our commitment to provide generous quantities of nutritious foods each month when they visit our pantry. This includes lots of fresh dairy, fresh produce, and frozen meat, chicken, and fish, as well as generous supplies of pantry staples, such as soups, vegetables, fruits, tuna, peanut butter, cereal, milk, rice, spaghetti and sauce, and much more. But ensuring health and well-being requires more than just food. It includes providing extra food to families in the summer, when their children do not have access to the free or discounted meals at their schools. It means providing backpacks filled with school supplies to all school age children in our pantry families, so they have the tools they need for academic success. It involves stocking and providing for special foods needed by clients due to health problems, religious requirements, or cultural preferences. It includes providing baby food, diapers and wipes, bath tissue, adult protective undergarments, and other special products that are difficult for low-income families to afford. Too, ensuring health and well-being means supporting the need each family has for being served in an environment in which the volunteers are kind, compassionate, and patient. Where each client family is known, their needs are understood, and accommodation is made for whatever physical, emotional, cognitive, or other impairments may impact their lives. Unity Food Pantry volunteers work tirelessly and passionately to bring all these elements of service to our neighbors in need.
